What do we celebrate on May Day?
How the term "Labor" May Day was established

May 1st is designated as a mandatory holiday and is known worldwide as Labor Day, and is associated with protests. However, not everyone knows the historical meaning of the word.

On May Day 1886 in Chicago, labor movements rose up wanting to claim 8 hours with better working conditions, with the slogan "eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, eight hours of sleep". At least 400,000 people across the country participated in this mobilization. During the protests after several days, more than 80 people were injured, including protesters and police officers, due to explosives that someone threw at the police and then due to the clashes that occurred between them.

In our country, the first demonstration for May Day took place in 1892-93 when 2000 workers took to the streets asking for state insurance for work accidents, for the working hours to be 8 hours and for Sunday to be a holiday. This particular day is established as a holiday and all businesses and services are closed.

This year's Labor Day takes on quite large dimensions, which it has not had for several decades. The life of the people, their peace and decent living, the right to a better future are what are threatened, insulted and challenged every day.

On the other hand, we have the well-known festival of Spring flowers, the ancient May Day, which over the years has been formalized. The first official flower festival, or flower festival, was founded first in Athens and was called Anthesteria. Then it spread to other cities of Greece and during the ceremony, processions carrying flowers were directed to the sanctuaries.
