During the meeting, the disposition of the firefighting forces was examined, which this year number more than 18,000 permanent and seasonal firefighters, which is larger than ever, while in 2022 the force consisted of approximately 15,500 people. Significant reinforcement has also been achieved in the fleet of vehicles, which have increased by 270 in the last three years and now reach 3,700. The forest commando units (EMODE), the first six of which were formed in 2022, now number 20 and exceed 1,500 members. In addition, the Fire Brigade will be reinforced for another year with almost 300 pre-deployed personnel from five European countries.
The Prime Minister and the Ministry's leadership discussed the progress of the implementation of the "EIGIS" program and presented the plan for the more extensive use of drones in Attica and in vulnerable areas throughout the territory, for the immediate detection and rapid first attack of fire outbreaks.
Specifically for drones, it was noted that their bases have almost doubled compared to last year, from 45 to 80 to date, while the unmanned fleet has aerial vehicles that can fly even in extreme weather conditions and are equipped with thermal cameras.
A review was also made of the multifaceted preparations that have been made to prevent the occurrence or spread of fires, including the ongoing land clearances, the Antinero program and targeted clearances near archaeological sites and the electricity transmission network.
Regarding clearances, due to the special conditions regarding rainfall, it was agreed to extend the deadline for declaring clearances until June 15.
