Professional painters spend more time preparing the space than actually painting. This is the chore part, but the more care you take at this stage, the better the paint and the longer the color will last.

If you've never done it yourself before, taking on such a task can be intimidating, but it shouldn't discourage you because it's not impossible.

Priority in preparation

The number one mistake is failure to plan. This can include failing to buy the right tools and products (eg primer) or failing to ensure you have enough time to prepare the surface, which is key to a successful painting. Tape the edges, lay down a tarp, and find a realistic timeline for the project, which will depend on both the size of the space and the intensity of the color you choose.

Use the right tools

In recent years, there have been some technological improvements to the old system of color trays and rolls. Even choosing the right kind of film is also important.

Scrub your surfaces

The smoother the surface, the better the result. Loose old paint and plaster should be removed with scrapers or sandpaper. If you are repainting your wall, you should lightly sand the surface before you begin. You don't always have to sand off all the previous colors as long as the surface is in good condition.

Don't skip the primer

Don't skip the priming stage, no matter how tempting it is. Primer is designed to stabilize surfaces and prepare them for paint.

Paint smart

Once the prep is done, it's time for the fun part! But there is a right and wrong way to paint. Start by choosing a low or no Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) paint that emits less odor than traditional formulas. Apply the color in a vertical direction and then spread it horizontally. Paint in one direction only to minimize any brush marks and brush pattern effects.

Follow the one meter rule

To make things even easier during the painting process, try to divide the room into smaller sections and paint them methodically. You should start in the middle and then work your way up to the roof about 1 meter wide. Once there, go back and do the lower side. A few extra moves of the roller and your walls will look brand new!
